So there I was, fresh off bullying the False Knight and feeling pretty smug about my Vengeful Spirit. Then Greenpath happened. One minute I'm admiring the lush, verdant paradise, and the next I'm getting my shell handed to me by a red-cloaked bug who looks suspiciously like me but with better posture. Her name is Hornet, and in 2026 she remains the ultimate rite of passage for every Hollow Knight newbie. You don't kill her—thank goodness—but you do have to beat her to progress. And yes, she's so iconic she got her own game. No pressure. 😅

How I Found Hornet (Without Losing My Mind)
Start at the Greenpath Stag Station. It's the closest bench, which matters because you'll be doing the walk of shame back to your Shade more times than you'd like to admit. Head out of the station and go up. You'll pop out of a hole with an overhang above you. Go left and up onto that overhang, and you'll spot an opening in the wall to your left. That's the way. Head inside.

The walk to the arena is a straight line with zero enemies. Zero. It's almost suspicious. Once you reach the drop-off, just hop down to trigger the fight. The first time, you get a neat bit of dialogue and your first real clue about the game's story. Then Hornet starts moving, and your calm little stroll becomes a panic workout.

How I Fought Hornet (Read: Flailed and Learned)
Unlike the False Knight, Hornet is quick. Her moveset is varied, unpredictable, and frankly a little rude. My first attempt was not about hitting her. It was about staying calm and learning to recognize her attacks. Here's the cheat sheet I wish I'd had:
| Attack | What It Looks Like | How I Dodge It |
|---|---|---|
| Jump Dive 🦗 | Hornet leaps up and launches herself at me | Run beneath her just before she hits |
| False Jump 😈 | Same startup as Jump Dive, but she lands without attacking | Wait. Don't panic-dodge too early |
| Thread Sphere 🧵 | She floats and glows with painful thread | Stay away and use the moment to heal |
| Half-Arena Thrust ⚔️ | She dashes half the arena with her needle out | Jump over her and sneak a quick back hit |
| Needle Attack 🪡 | She throws her needle, then pulls it back | Jump as high as you can right before it hits |

The Jump Dive is easiest to avoid by running beneath her just before she hits. The False Jump starts out exactly the same, but she just lands back on the ground without attacking. Dodge too fast and you'll eat a needle to the face. The Thread Sphere is different—she surrounds herself with glowing thread that hurts on contact. Just stay out of the way and take the free heal. For ground attacks, jumping is your best friend. Jump over the Half-Arena Thrust and get a quick back hit. For the Needle Attack, jump as high as you can right before the needle hits you. I learned that the hard way, repeatedly. 😅

When I Died (And I Did)
When you get killed in this fight, your Shade spawns in the tunnel before the boss arena. It will come at you quickly, so be prepared to fight it as soon as you pass through the opening in the wall. I cannot stress this enough: do not walk in there daydreaming about your next attempt. The Shade does not care about your feelings.

How I Ended the Fight
Once you've got enough hits in, Hornet will stagger. If you don't need to heal, you can get a few hits in here, but healing should take priority in this moment. There are no stages to her fight in Greenpath, so once she recovers from her stagger, you'll continue facing off against the same move set. Just keep at it until she leaves the arena, ending the fight. You'll be able to pick up the Mothwing Cloak, then continue your exploration of Greenpath. If you don't know where to go next, I'd recommend heading as far down as you can.

Final Thoughts from a Recovering Hornet Victim
Beating Hornet felt like learning to dance with a very angry, very fast bee. 🐝 She's smart, capable, and one of the most satisfying fights in the game. In 2026, this battle still holds up as a perfect test of patience and pattern recognition. Don't worry about hitting her on your first try. Just keep calm, learn her attacks, and remember: she doesn't die. She just leaves. And then you get a cool cloak. What a deal. 🏆
